Habitat Survey in Wheatstone Field, Western Australia

As a part of the further development of Chevron Australia’s Wheatstone gas field, located in North West WA, habitat surveys are being conducted to assess and provide data on areas of interest.

During early September 2009, Dive Works worked together with Neptune Geomatics and URS Australia to complete a Habitat Survey in the Wheatstone Field. Two Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) pilots from Dive Works completed the project using the Seaeye Falcon ROV with video recording. Plus a tracking system was supplied by Neptune Geomatics.

Neptune Geomatics produced a GIS map of the surveyed area with Dive Works producing the overlayed ROV tracks and easting/northing grids.

Completing over 40 dives with the ROV, the depth ranged from 90m to 270m with each transect line running up to half a kilometre long. Dive Works captured the required data for URS Australia, launching the ROV off the vessel Calypso Star.

Background:

Chevron Australia Pty Ltd discovered the Wheatstone gas field about 145 kilometres (90 mi.) off Western Australia's Pilbara coast in August 2004. The field is located 200 km north of Onslow in water depths of around 200 m.

Wheatstone Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and domestic gas plant in north west WA.

Milestones:

  • August 2004 – Discovery of Wheatstone Field (Wheatstone-1 well)

  • March 2008 – Announcement of Wheatstone greenfield development option

  • June 2008 – Identification of three sites for further investigation, based on site screening study  (two near Onslow and one at Cape Preston)
